Health – Back Pain Symptoms, Causes, Therapies, Prevention.: Back pain is the pain related to posture that radiates to the neck, because of problems related to ligaments, muscles, nerves bony structure that makes the spine called vertebral bodies (vertebra).
A physical symptom at the spine or back and ranges from mild, moderate to severe. Pain in the upper back results from aorta disorders, chest tumors, and spine inflammation.
Pain occurs because of an activity, injury, or any other medical conditions.
Back pain can occur because of previous occupation or degenerative disease of the disc.
Back pain such as sciatica occurs from the pinched nerve; this happens when the herniated disc in the spine presses the nerve. Lower back pain relates to the bony lumbar spine, discs between vertebrae and ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves, back muscles, abdominal and pelvic internal organs, and lumbar area skin.
Back Pain causes due to:
- Overusing back muscles
- Sitting and lying down for long hours
- Wrong postures while sitting or standing
- Wrong sleeping position that causes discomfort
- Excess lifting
Reasons of Back Pain:
- Strained ligaments or muscles
- Muscle spasms
- Muscle tension
- Damaged discs
- Injuries, fractures, or falls
- Lifting something heavy, improperly, and an awkward movement
- Long drives without a break
- Pelvic inflammation, kidney and bladder infection
- Individuals with sleep disturbances
- Shingles- caused by virus leading to back pain with affected nerves
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Old age
- Obesity and overweight
- Strenuous physical activity or work
- Genetic factors
Symptoms of Back Pain:
- A dull aching sensation in the lower back
- Shooting pain radiating to the feet
- Difficulty in standing up because of the pain
- A reduced range of motion with decreased ability to flex back
Back pain can be diagnosed with X-rays, MRI, or CT scan.
X-rays detect signs of broken bones or arthritis, alignment of bones.
MRI or CT scans show herniated disc or problems in ligaments, bones, tissues, nerves, blood vessels.
The bone scan detects compression fractures caused by osteoporosis.
Acute back pain may remain for 6-weeks.
Chronic back pain may be persistent for 3- months and above.
Therapies for Back Pain:
Physical therapies like Botox are known to reduce pain by paralysis of the sprained muscles in the spasms. The injections are efficient for 3 to 4 months.
Traction: An equipment used to push and pull around the back aligning the herniated disk relieves pain.
Yoga: Breathing exercise, specific movements, and poses provide strength to the muscle and improve posture.
Prevention of Back Pain:
Diet: Include foods rich in Vitamin D and calcium, as they are important for bone health.
Weight control: Reducing bodyweight that overuses back muscles can relieve back pain.
Shoes: Refrain from using flat shoes as it may strain your back muscles
Bed: Support your back with the mattress that supports your spine, using a pillow that keeps your neck at a steep angle.
Long journeys in bike or car– Make sure you keep your postures right and take frequent breaks.
