World News: Italian Ambassador and Carabinieri Police killed on Congo Convoy – The attack took place near the town of Kanyamahoro, while on the way to the city of Rutshuru to conduct a U.N Stabilization mission. The convoy started off from Goma, the country’s Eastern region Capital.
It is also reported that two other members of Congo had also been killed, one of them Major Guillame Djike – the army’s spokesperson of North Kivu.
The Late Mr. Luca Attanosio has been the envoy to Congo since September 2017. He was 44 years old and had joined the Italian Diplomatic career back in 2003. The town of Kanyamahoro, present within the Virunga National Park had been subject to various attacks previously by various rebels and militia based around the National Park.
The Italian Foreign Ministry had confirmed the deaths of the two Italians from the city of Goma. “It is with deep sorrow that the foreign ministry confirms the death today in Goma of the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, and of a policeman from the carabinieri,” the Ministry said.
Congo, a central African nation has been in the grip of various civil wars and insurgencies since its inception. The country was formerly under the dictatorship of Joseph Kabila since 1960 and had its first peaceful transition to power only in January 2019 under the current President Felix Tshisekedi. The country was also a former colony of Belgium.
