PUNE : On 23rd October 2020, Maharashtra state government had given order to Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) that any other metro extension proposal should be sent through the PUMTA (Pune Urban Metropolitan Transport Authority) which had been formed to manage and solve traffic problem in PMR ( Pune Metropolitan Region)

Currently the State government’s urban development department arranged a meeting regarding the extension of existing metro routes. In this meeting, principal secretary of urban development department Bhushan Gagrani directed Maha Metro to send extension proposal through PUMTA .

At presently, Maharashtra Maha Metro is constructing the route from Swargate to Pimpri ,while PMRDA( Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority) is developing the one route- Hinjewadi to the Shivajinagar civil court.

There was the demand to extend existing routes across the Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad. Maha Metro has prepared the (DPR) Detailed Project Report of Swargate to Katraj and Nigdi to Pimpri routes.

On other hand, PUMTA has prepared a concise mobility plan for entire metropolitan region.

State government formed PUMTA in the year 2019 which constituted 20-member body which focuses on the increasing efficiency of the existing public transport system and the developing extensive transport system. The Pune divisional commissioner is elected as the chairperson of the PUMTA.

The purpose of formulation of the PUMTA is to set up an efficient authority to take all the challenges of transport-related issues in the metropolitan area.

The authority is supposed to coordinate all the traffic schemes and initiatives among concerned organizations while suggesting effective solutions to the traffic issues.
