New COVID-19 strain discovered in France’s Brittany region

A New COVID-19 strain has been discovered in France’s Northwest Brittany region on Tuesday. French health authorities identified this variant in a geriatric center in Brittany’s Rennes.

World News: A New COVID-19 strain has been discovered in France’s Northwest Brittany region on Tuesday. French health authorities identified this variant in a geriatric center in Brittany’s Rennes. And, what’s more worrying of this particular variant is that some health officials who have attended to the infected patients of this variant, say it bypasses standard PCR tests.

Though initially suspected it was the same as the British variant, on further investigations it was found that this have no resemblance to that of any British variants and its was confirmed that it was the first of its variant. W.H.O has now temporarily placed this variant under “variant to be investigated” category.

Mathew Revest, an infectious diseases expert in Rennes University says that the clinical dynamics of this variant is similar to that of the U.K variant and this new cluster is no different from the others. He says that the new variant appears to be more stable genetically and could end up dangerous. He added that it is normal and expected that virus mutates with time.

French authorities have not found any history of contact between the cluster of people in Bagneaux and anybody who had travelled from U.K, hinting that this virus has mutated independently in the body of the identified hosts. France is already in midst of rising cases as its daily infected numbers are above 20,000.

France had already shut it borders with Britain in wake of identification of the U.K strain back on December 2020 and has kept its borders open for only the incoming of individuals with sufficiently necessary reasons. Incoming individuals into France were necessarily asked to show up with a negative COVID-19 certificate.

There has been calls for nationwide lockdown again in France, but the government is eyeing only on increased restrictions in the country as a nationwide curfew is already in place. Businesses like bars, restaurants, resorts and other luxury businesses were kept closed already in the country for a while.

Today France recorded 25,000+ cases and has witnessed already 66,565 deaths since the onset of pandemic. Vaccination drives have been going on actively in France and 45,000 people have received vaccine shots till now. But, the recent scuffle with Oxford’s AstraZeneca’s vaccine over the alleged side effects of the vaccine has stalled the vaccine drive for now.
