New Delhi: Officials from the Prime Minister’s Office have said Rs 2.25 lakh was donated by PM Narendra Modi from his own pocket as the “initial corpus” to the PM CARES Fund just after it was set up.
The money collected under PM CARES is assigned to deal with the Covid 19 pandemic, PM CARES is short for Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund.

“PM Modi donated Rs 2.25 lakh towards the initial corpus of PM CARES Fund after it was set up,” a PMO official said, on the condition of anonymity.
“PM Modi has a long legacy of contributing to public causes ranging from girl child education to work on cleaning the Ganga to welfare of the underprivileged. These donations have now exceeded Rs 103 crore,” the official added.
Earlier, Congress and other parties have raised questions and criticism legal validity and need of PM Cares Fund, comparing to the similar Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
Concerns have been raised about corporate social responsibility benefits denied to contributions to state disaster relief funds. PM CARES Fund cannot be audited by Comptroller and Auditor General of India and also not comes under RTI.
The PM Cares Fund was set up in March and received Rs 3,076.62 crore in just five days of its formation, as per an account statement made public on Wednesday.
