The riots took place in a prison on the outskirts of Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo on Sunday. It is reported that 8 prisoners died in this riot and 37 were injured. In this riot, the prisoners tried to escape by opening the doors of the jail, due to which police personnel used force.
Police spokesperson Ajit Rohana said that prisoners at the Mahara Jail, located about 15 km north of Colombo, started causing troubles, following which the jail authorities took steps to control the situation.
The incident came to light when the number of corona cases in Sri Lanka’s congested jails is increasing. The pandemic is causing unrest among prisoners. Inmates protested in several jails in recent weeks.
“The incident started after a group of inmates tried to open the door and fled, after which the authorities had to use force,” Rohana said. He said that at least 37 more people, including two jailers, were injured during the entire incident and all of them have been shifted to nearby Ragama Hospital.
Rohana said that the prisoners wanted him to be shift the prisoners to another jail from here, as the corona test came positive of 175 inmates at Mahara Jail. Coronavirushas been confirmed in more than a thousand people associated with prisons. A prisoner was killed in a similar unrest last week.
