Tamil Nadu: The state govt. has decided to transfer the investigation of the alleged custodial death of father – son duo, P Jeyaraj and J Bennix, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, on Sunday.
“The state government has decided to transfer the probe to CBI. We will do it after necessary consent and consultation with Madras High Court,” Palaniswami said after recollecting the sequence of events. “The father and son were taken in custody in a case related to lockdown violation. They were in remand until the next day and died later. The Madras HC has taken Suo Moto proceedings,” he added.
On June 19, Tamil Nadu police picked up P Jeyaraj and his son J Bennix for questioning in Tuticorin’s Sathankulam for allegedly violating lockdown rules. The police filed an FIR against the two, and held them for keeping their mobile accessories shop open beyond permissible hours. The police while in custody, allegedly thrashed them, leading to their deaths.
