The Union government on Thursday urged states and Union Territories to take mucormycosis or black fungus seriously and make the disease a notifiable disease under the Act, stating that the infection among COVID-19 patients is leading to prolonged morbidity and mortality.
A notifiable disease means that it is required by law to be reported to the government health authorities. The collection of information on the notifiable disease allows the authorities to monitor the disease and to provide early warnings of possible outbreaks.
