Gadget Insights: After the Indian Government issued its new Draft Guidelines for regulating digital media, OTT and Social Media, Facebook responded to the Guidelines that it will take it’s time to go through the Draft and will proceed as per the requirements.
Facebook said that it will always welcome regulations to conduct itself rightly. Facebook says that its agenda of maintaining safety and security of users has been prime. However, Facebook expressed its concern with some of the clauses of the new guidelines.
Disclosing originator of mischievous messages:
There was a particular guideline with respect to conduct of social media services. The guideline had asked social media companies to disclose the originator of mischievous messages. Here is where the challenge comes for Facebook’s WhatsApp and Messenger, as both applications use end-to-end encryption to protect users’ privacy.
These end-to-end encrypted messages mean that even Facebook cannot access to the people at the ends. This also prevents the company from tracing any originators of any message. The government said that it does not want to know the contents of the message, but only the originator of the message.
This rule to disclose the originator is to prevent, detect, enquire, prosecute and punish the person in case if it pertains a threat to National Security, Sovereignty of the Nation, Objection to women and children.
